The Traxxas Slash (Platinum edition) is an excellent short course truck. It is mainly designed for on track performance but it is fun all around. You pay a premium price compared to a regular slash 4×4, but you also get premium quality anodized aluminum parts as well. This short course truck is not it does not come ready to run.

What comes in the box:

  • Extreme brushless VXL power for 60+ mph speeds, integrated low-voltage protection, and waterproof electronics
  • Rigid, LCG chassis with adjustable front and rear sway bars and sealed, silicone filled center differential
  • Hard-anodized and PTFE-coated aluminum GTR shocks with titanium nitride-coated shafts
  • Blue-anodized 6061-T6 aluminum C-hubs, steering blocks, rear hub carriers, and axle nuts.
  • Clear polycarbonate body with overspray film and window masks
  • Rigid, low center of gravity chassis
  • Hard-anodized and PTFE-coated aluminum GTR shocks with Titanium Nitride shafts
  • Adjustable front and rear swaybar.
  • Sealed, silicone filled center differential
  • Blue-anodized 6061-T6 aluminum C-Hubs, steering blocks, rear hub carriers
Despite all the upgrades this car comes with you’re still going to need a few things to get it up and running. First of all you will need your own transmitter and receiver. The receiver is where you will be plugging in your esc and servo(s) and the transmitter is of course how you will drive the truck. I recommend you buy the Traxxas TQi transmitter and receiver together as a bundle to save money.
These two items are extremely high quality and reliably, especially for people just starting out. There are other higher quality transmitters and receivers out there. If you are interested in that I suggest you read my article here.
The next item you will need to get this short course truck up and running is battery. If you are not familiar with the different types of batteries I recommend reading my last article here.
The two mains types of batteries I recommend for this vehicle is a 2s lipo battery or 3s lipo battery. As for which one you go with, it really depends on what you plan to use the truck for. If your looking to race on the track and or achieve that 60+ mph advertise speed then I recommend the 3s lipo battery because it will give you the faster times your looking for.
But if your just looking to drive it around for fun, at the park on a beach etc..I recommend the 2s lipo battery. Why? Because the higher volltage lipo batteries can be really hard remote control cars with all the power they bring and how fast they make them go, and if you run into things fast enough it will break. Especially if your new to this hobby, you don’t want to spend more money and hours of your time figuring out how to replace parts.
Of course with lipo batteries come special lipo chargers. I recommend the Traxxas EZ-Peak Plus Charger. This Charger is very high quality and nice compared to other chargers because it take all of the guess work out of it. When you plug your battery in it automatically selects the correct type of battery, voltage, and mah for you. Then beeps to let you know when the battery is finished charging.
If you have read any of my articles about batteries you know that suggest charging your lipo batteries in a Lipo Safe Charging Bag. This is basically just to ensure that if the lipo battery somehow begins to catch fire (which is rare instances they have been known to do) it will contain it soley to that battery.
Another item you will receive in the box is a clear poly-carbonate body that allows custom paintwork (as seen in the picture at the top). Some people also choose to keep the body clear, it is just a preference thing. If you would like me to create an article going more in depth on how to customize the look of your body, how use different masks, and which types of spray cans or air brushes to use then leave a comment in the comment section below.
Some people may say all of this looks and sounds great but may think it way too expensive. If that is you then I suggest taking a look at the regular slash 4×4 rtr. This truck is essentially the same as the platinum edition without all of the aluminum upgrades. It includes everything from batteries, esc, motor, transmitter, and receiver. You will still need to purchase a charger, but this truck offers the same speeds and fun is the platinum edition at a fraction of the cost.
